Owner Yvette has had coeliac disease herself for 50 years, and six of her children also have coeliac disease. Drawing on her personal experience and many years of knowledge of gluten-free baking, she has developed her own recipes. This allows us to create fresh, artisan products that you can enjoy with confidence.Six of her children also have coeliac disease.
Entrepreneurship and craftsmanship are in Yvette’s blood. For more than seven generations, her family has been connected to farming in Wales, while her ancestors also ran butcher shops. From an early age, she was therefore surrounded by a love of good food, quality and creating beautiful products.
But food took on a special meaning for Yvette from a very young age. She was diagnosed with coeliac disease when she was just two years old. At the time, gluten-free products were hardly available. Together with her mother and grandma, she began baking and experimenting herself. This is where her love of cooking began – not only out of necessity, but above all from the joy of creating something delicious that she could safely eat.
With a great deal of love, patience and perseverance, Yvette continued to develop more of her own gluten-free recipes.
In 2012, Yvette turned her passion into a dream and opened The Welsh Bakestone, a completely gluten-free bakery and tearoom.
What started from her own experience with coeliac disease grew into an artisan gluten-free bakery with an online shop, a loyal customer base and partnerships with restaurants, cafés and specialist retailers.
To this day, Yvette’s personal experience remains at the heart of The Welsh Bakestone. She knows how important it is to be able to trust that something is genuinely gluten-free. But she also knows that being safe is not enough.
Gluten-free food should above all be delicious.
Freshly baked
The dream continues…
After all these years, Yvette is still dreaming of what comes next. Her wish is to one day open her own shop and tearoom again: a warm and welcoming place where people can drop in for fresh gluten-free bread, a delicious slice of cake and a cup of coffee or tea.
A place where someone with coeliac disease does not first have to ask: “Can I eat this?”
But can simply choose whatever they fancy.
That is what The Welsh Bakestone stands for: enjoying gluten-free food without having to miss out.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition caused by eating gluten. Gluten is a group of proteins naturally found in grains such as wheat, rye and barley.
When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their immune system reacts to it. This causes inflammation in the lining of the small intestine. The intestinal lining can become damaged, which can reduce the absorption of nutrients. This can, among other things, lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Coeliac disease is not the same as a wheat allergy, gluten allergy or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. It is an autoimmune condition and cannot be cured. The only treatment is a lifelong strict gluten-free diet.
